Devil's Night re-cap

Well the night started off well enough. Got the gear in the van, arrived at the spot, got a good parking space, made our presence known, all a-ok. Party goers we're filing in, lots of costumes including a spot on Super Mario Bros duo. We got comped on the beer. First snag was the show was running late. Not really a big deal, just a bit of a drag seeing as I (Jesse) had to get up early in the A.M. for work related reasons and i was taking the D.D. duties for the evening. We ended up starting around 1230-ish ( I think anyway) so we were in good shape. Party was in full swing and getting pretty rowdy. First two bands (Humble Boy Club and The Moon, good sets by both bands by the way) got most of the crowd going but you could tell there was element in attendance that was looking for something heavier.

So we set up, introduce ourselves and open with our Halloween inspired cover of "The Munster's" theme song. That got folks attention. Brought em in, made them listen. Now let me back track a bit. During The Moon's set, there was a rather crusty and severely inebriated fella who kept grabbing the microphone, screaming gibberish and being just generally obnoxious. So this guy was pretty much planning on doing the same thing for our set. We weren't so keen on that seeing as it ran its course 1/4 the way The Moon's set. I'll come back to him later.

2nd song played was Flare Up. About 5 seconds into it, the moshing starts. About 2 or 3 dudes at first. Next time I look up, it's about 5 or 6 (including a guy in a skirt). Towards the end of the song just about every dude with some pent up testosterone, a few beers in his gut and a need to swing their fists was thrashing about in a fairly good size pit. Well all right, got em moving. Played it well too, no fuck ups, good energy.

3rd song played was Rawkin Raul. Before we start I have too tell crusty dude that he will NOT be screaming in the mic while we play. We start it off, he lets out one death metal growl in the mic and promptley gives it up for the pit, which starts up again with a gusto. All right, we're palying well, crowds into it. We get to the guitar solo and about 5 seconds into it the door guy is standing in front me telling me to turn down. You gotta tell us in the middle of the song to turn down? Cant wait a minute? Then things are made more clear: "The cops are here, stop playing!" .
Well ok, that's a different story.

So the usual rigamoral that goes with cops showing up to a party commences. It's been awhile but it's not the first time we've had shows stopped by cops. While the negotioations are going on with New Paltz's finest, we keep being told different things by different people. "Ok you can play", "The cops are still here dont play", "You can play, but you have to be quiet". OK, cool, we'll just wait for the word. The person's word we were waiting on was Lara Hope's as she set up the show and it she put herself as the one responsible to the police. And it seemed for a minute that all was good and the show would go on but Johnny Law had a change of heart. It probally didnt help our case that more than a couple idealistic young drunks thought it was a good idea randomly yell "FUCK THE POLICE!". Yeah, way to fight the power bro-ham. They came back in, and ordered everybody to leave the premises immediately. I'm sure the taxi cabs made some money that night cuz there was a lot of folks who were nowhere close to being able to drive. Crusty dude got into fight with someone and also continued to grab the mic when no one was looking and scream into it. I think someone removed him from the scene eventually.

Yeah, only 2 1/2 songs played, 2 or 3 other bands didnt even get to play at all and what was shaping up to be a pretty hellacious Devils Night was cut short. Props to Lara and her crew for setting it up. They definitely got the word out.

So we pack up the gear and head back to Kingston. Me and Dave in the van, Justin in the car with Erica, Winter and Jen. The drive is fine, no cops bug us which wouldnt of mattered as all drivers were sober. We hit Abeele st and from out of nowhere a bottle flies at us and shatters on the hood of the van. What the fuck? Our companions in the car behind us are hit with a baseball. Are you kidding me? Now what? We call the cops, they show up pretty quick. The officer looked at Dave and her eyes bugged out her head seeing as he had on zombie make up and fake blood running down his head. We find out later that we werent the only vehicles pelted with garbage by a group of drunken a-holes. In fact the police had there handful in general with K-Town in general.
That's Devils Night for you I reckon.
